What an alpha channel is and why it matters
The alpha channel is the fourth image layer storing per-pixel transparency — from fully invisible to opaque. It's what lets a logo float over any background and a cut-out person join a collage without a white box. JPG can't store alpha, which is why the result ships as PNG. Semi-transparent edges — hair, glass, shadows — fade smoothly, no jaggies.
